Alpine Meadows
On the north shore of Lake Tahoe, just six miles from Tahoe City, Alpine Meadows is a sort of haven for hardcore skiers in search of backcountry-style terrain in a resort setting. But families flock here, too, thanks to a great ski school and the Tiegel Terrain Park for youngsters. If you head to Alpine Meadows in search of wide-open slopes and powder, it will not disappoint. The backside, off Ward Peak, features bowl skiing at its best. At night, the bars and dining spots of Truckee and Tahoe City beckon.

Northstar-at-Tahoe
Just 30 minutes from the wild nights of Reno, Northstar is firmly entrenched as one of the country's foremost family resorts. Squaw Valley
Home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw's reputation for unsurpassed terrain is set in stone. That rep begins with the KT-22 Lift, widely regarded as the single greatest lift in the country for the big-mountain terrain it accesses. In addition to 17 bowls, Squaw also has two beginner areas, one at the bottom and one at the top, so even novices can enjoy the view. Ease the leg burn with an après-ski beer and a bite in the base village. At night, head to nearby Truckee or the casinos of South Lake Tahoe.

Sierra-at-Tahoe
Sierra is known as a locals’ spot, and that usually means they know something you don't. The resort gets an average of 480 inches of snow per season. That alone should be enough. If not, there are a wealth of programs geared to families and children to enhance your powder-filled stay. Experts can access backcountry terrain through several gates, and there's no shortage of in-bounds steeps. After dark, it's a short ride to South Lake Tahoe for endless nightlife. Casinos, shows, dancing – it's all here.
